A beautifully resolved example of Colin Chapman’s original Elan, this 1970 S4 SE Fixed Head Coupé is finished in French Blue with a black leather interior and wood trim, and has covered 68,000 miles from new. It underwent a full chassis-up restoration in 2012, benefits from Elan Sprint camshafts and has been set up by respected Lotus specialist Paul Matty.

The restoration is well documented, with a photographic record accompanying the car alongside three files of invoices evidencing its subsequent servicing and maintenance. Work included the fitment of a new Spyder Cars chassis together with attention to the body and gelcoat.

Powered by Lotus’s 1,558cc Twin Cam and driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox, the Elan built its reputation around extraordinarily low weight, supple ride quality and steering that remains a benchmark more than half a century later.

The S4 SE adds the more desirable Special Equipment specification to that formula. Factory upgrades over the standard S4 included the higher-output Twin Cam, servo-assisted brakes, knock-on wheels and a taller final-drive ratio, together with a number of detail improvements.

The enclosed cabin of the Fixed Head Coupé brings greater refinement and weather protection while retaining the compact proportions and delicacy that define the original Elan.
