Subaru Impreza STI Spec C

JDM-spec 2.0-litre flat-four

304bhp at 6400rpm

The Impreza hatch faced a tough market in the UK upon its 2008 launch, as Subaru's reputation was built on the iconic two-door and saloon versions. Its price and early WRX and STI models didn't capture the excitement of its predecessors, and interest in Japanese rally-inspired cars was waning. However, behind the scenes, Subaru developed a limited-run model for homologation in Europe’s Group-N Rally Series, resulting in the impressive Spec C we have here.

This Spec C benefits from a weight-saving programme that shed 30kg using various lightweight components. Under the bonnet is the Japan-spec STI’s legendary 2-litre flat-four engine, not the 2.5-litre found in UK cars, delivering 304bhp at 6400rpm. A new ball-bearing turbo reduces friction, allowing quicker throttle response. The intercooler features a water spray system, reducing intake temperatures from 70°C to 40°C, helping retain about 25bhp and 30lb ft during intense driving.

This effect is particularly noticeable when exiting tight corners, providing explosive acceleration. Even after several hot laps, the Spec C maintains high performance, unlike the standard STI, which shows signs of fatigue. The Spec C also includes a high lateral-g fuel pump.

Chassis enhancements include a rear mechanical LSD replacing the Torsen unit on the regular STI, bespoke springs and dampers, a thicker rear anti-roll bar, and grippier rubber on 18-inch alloys. These upgrades result in a chassis that handles power more effectively than any previous STI, with sharper turn-in, less understeer, and improved ride comfort. The Brembo four-piston brake setup offers impressive stopping power with minimal fade.

This particular Spec C is a remarkable example of the breed. Imported by its only UK owner in 2019 through renowned JDM Import specialists Torque GT, it has covered only 8,300 miles since then, always garaged and never driven on salty winter roads. The odometer reads just 30,915 miles in total. Carefully selected for its superb condition, this car includes a thorough history folder with photos from its inspection in Japan. It drives wonderfully, feeling tight and true, reflecting the care shown by its previous custodians. The car has never had a single MOT advisory since arriving in the UK.

Upon arrival in the UK, the car was professionally undersealed and cavity sealed to a very high standard. The only modification is a custom stainless steel cat-back exhaust system, with the original unit supplied with the car. It rides on a set of recent Michelin Pilot Sport 4s.

The car has three service stamps in the book since arriving in the UK, a folder of paperwork including some Japanese history, and all import paperwork and a mileage certificate.

Spec Cs are rare, and this represents an excellent opportunity to acquire something special for weekend use, or a wonderfully usable and practical family hatchback for daily use that is likely to hold its value well into the future.
